Ongoing (III): Recruitment completed, but data collection ongoing
The overall goal of our birth cohort is to record a complete history of respiratory and gastrointestinal infections in infancy in order to investigate the effect of pattern, timing and sequence of infections and other risk factors influencing the immune response on the development of asthma and atopic diseases from a life-course perspective. Therefore, we enrolled 782 newborns in 5 Germn study centres. During the first 6 years, all parents are asked to fill in a symptom diary every day, take nasal or stool samples whenever their child shows predefined respiratory or gastrointestinal symptoms, and collect asymptomatic nasal and stool samples in asymptomatic children once a year.
